Dreams of the new season: just football please

Liverpool midfieldAFTER a positive start to the summer, when we signed a number of players in a short space of time, the summer has ended up pretty difficult.

We face a massive fight to keep hold of our best player, although in recent days John W Henry and Brendan Rodgers between them have delivered a massive verbal pipebomb to Arsenal and with them being the only show in town currently, I would be very surprised if Suarez isn’t still here come 3rd September.

In spite of finishing 7th again last year there were long spells where I was very happy with what we were doing. Our football was good and we approached almost every game with a positive attitude with a view to commanding the game.

After making mistakes in the summer transfer window we rectified them in January and Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho will be expected to play a large part this season. But we had left ourselves too much to do after a sluggish start. There were though signs that we had “got” Rodgers’ way of playing as the season closed.

We have improved our squad but if we don’t make further signings I think we are going to be finishing about 6th again. With massive summers of upheaval for a lot of our rivals this is a great chance to be bold and try and close the gap, but unless we bring in 2 or 3 more I think we’re going to fall short again.

I want to see us make a big challenge for 4th place and a good challenge in at least one of the domestic cups, preferably the FA Cup as I feel we have unfinished business with that after 2012. I really don’t buy that Arsenal are a much better team than us and considering their pursuit of Suarez now appears to be over, they have a lot of work to be doing themselves in the last few weeks of the window.

The way we approach the game is to be admired but I just think that we still have a shortage of goals on the right hand side. If we can address that issue then I think we will be in a much better position. I still think we need another combative central midfielder (I don’t like the idea of Lucas and Allen playing together too often) and Rodgers has his heart set on left-back competition.

Signing Aspas and Luis Alberto etc is good for the squad but I just feel that we haven’t yet managed to work on our first eleven sufficiently to improve massively. I like what we’ve done to date but I just don’t see us cutting the gap enough – yet. There are still 2 weeks to go in the window and that’s plenty of time to do some deals. But after the swift start to the season I can’t help but feel we’ve lost all of our momentum in the transfer market.

But with the way we play, if all clicks and if all goes well, it wouldn’t surprise me to see us have a good season with no more additions. Apart from a lack of depth and quality in key areas, our biggest Achilles heel last season was our consistency. That needs resolving. We all too often have an Aston Villa at home in us after 2 or 3 good wins in a row.

Either way, bring it. With Suarez, without Suarez. Without Downing or…. Actually, skip that… I just hope we can go out there and stick to what we believe in, which is good football and let’s hope we get an improved league positioning and we’re left talking about football and nothing else, not some other fiasco either on or off the field.

Just football this season please Liverpool.

We are not even in contention for top 4 . Poor manager . Europa qualification is best we can get

  • sad liver says:

hopefully we can see end of Liverpool’s premier league run..

  • gary says:

Poor manager??? Get a grip hes done a great job and can only spend money he is given

    • realist says:

Ha ha ha . Deluded .

Wake up . Rodgers is a flipping cabbage. Couldn’t manage a burger van. Even Reading knew he was rubbish

      • aaron says:

        A cabbage?

        Excellent, expert opinion there.

I’d prefer to take another expert’s view and accept Rodgers is a ‘fantastic young manager’….. Alex Ferguson.

        • David says:

Rodgers is the best thing that has happened to Liverpool since the premiership started

          You will all see

          • guest says:

Deluded, all you are going by is what has come out of Brendan’s mouth, sorry but actions still speak louder than words, to me at least anyway, he never learns either, which is a fundamental floor, once again we have a weaker squad than the year before, check the numbers…6 out, 4 in…….from a squad that was already thread bare. Sorry but I just can’t see what this fascination with the manager is. I don’t care what anybody says, if Brendan couldn’t talk so well, more fans would be on his back, its this that is worrying.

          • tommy says:

David . Go and see your doctor immediately. I think he will recommend a lobotomy

        • guest says:

Lol, yeh and Fergie was very happy to retire knowing that with Brendan in charge their record of 20 premiership titles is safe, he was scared when Kenny was back, hence his constant attacks on Suarez and Dalglish, the mere fact that fergie approved of him (Brendan) being the Liverpool boss, shows me that really he doesn’t take Brendan that serious.

        • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

“rodgers is a fantastic young manager”….alex fergie. and you swallowed it hook, line and sinker. i doubt you re a kop. when has fergie never attacked anything good from anfield or anyone that has the guts to stand up to him? you seriously dont want me to mention names. further more you think his choosing morinho nd moyes has nothing to do with anfield? “conspiracy” get real.

    • guest says:

Sorry, but he is poor, give me an example of why he has been good?, there is no evidence on his cv to suggest he will ever be any good, begs the question why a club as big as LFC were daft and naïve enough to offer Brendan the job in the first place, it boggles the mind.

we can stil achieve the unexpected. YNWA

  • Erin says:

We need at least 2 more signings to even consider and sort of top 4 challange. Spurs are looking like tittle challengers if they keep bale, never mind 4’th. which is prompting Wenger to go for our players. Summer so far , has weakened our team, instead of strengthening . We have loaned our keeper, unsettled Skertel, and Carragher is retired. Huge deficit that is, no replacement as yet. Suarez is completely uninterested in the team. So, weaker defence, weaker attack and Allen back fit to mess that midfield royally.

Unless, we sign a defender/striker/ mf player…we are going to struggle. There is still time, but going in evidence from last year … Remember Dempsey ??? Bullet dodged and sigursen ? Who by the way, is probably for sale after spurs added 2 more mf players?
Remember the saga of the last day Dempsey deal?
Not impressed yet on that front.

Players out, Carrol, downing needed to leave. Pepe Reina should have been straight sale next year !!!

  • Wayne Lynch says:

Stevie Gerrard said we need 2 class players AND keep Suarez have a chance of top 4

Well , there are NO top class players coming , and Suarez is sulking

Rodgers is out of his depth. He cant attract any decent players and he has alienated our best player

    • Erin says:

I know he is clueless and can’t attract anyone. He is the latest managerial mess since a certain spaniard left. A genuine challange to top 4, or sack him . That simple

    • aaron says:

When you say he cannot attract decent players do you mean the four horseman of the apocolypse… Downing, Henderson, Adam and Carroll for nearly £80m.

Or, did you mean Sturridge and Coutinho for £23m.

Mignolet and Toure look good and bringing through youth at a regular rate.

You detest these positive steps do you? do you like Liverpool or would you prefer the good old dark days again.

It’s difficult to win the league without having your house in order, the first time we have had stability and growth and all you can do is moan that success isn’t instantaneous. That is an awful thing to have ‘In Your Heart’ considering where we were a couple of years ago.

No one was moaning when we signed players early on and if you know football at all you will realize some deals are easier than others. Furthermore a) we are not the big team we think we are b) patience and development are key c) changing managers every five minutes does not work.

Please support the team, and the team are the owners through management, players and all the way down to match-day volunteers, they’d appreciate it more that some of the negativity.

      • David says:

        Well said

        Finally someone with some sense

      • guest says:

Yeh………..lets all dump our heads in the sand and pretend everything is rosy…………get a grip…..superfan.

      • tommy says:

Aaron. He has signed average rubbish this summer and last summer too. Top players like mkhitaryan and even eriksen etc have no interest in joining us now

Get a grip really.Rodgers is our worst mistake ever.

        • aaron says:

How do you know they are average players? Are you part of the LFC scouting department and have you seen any of them play regularly or just reading stats?

current reports from ex players, reporters, commentators and fans who stream every single game say they are better than average and might be the type of players to suit our style (we’ve never really had a consistent style in the premier league era, save one or two seasons under Benitez).

Arsenal changed style and were immediately successful, unfortunately the Premier League is a different monster these days and we are late arriving at the dinner table.

you’d all agree that a team with a certain style, over time, if effective (Newcastle 6-0, Wigan & Norwich scored five etc – some hiccups but generally pleasing) has a better chance of success than a team that doesn’t. At least that’s what I’d expect from us YNWA fans anyway.

Giggs, Beckham, Scholes and the Neville brothers were prospects in the making before continued achievements. How many of us were screaming for the club to give our exciting prospects a chance.

Now we are doing so you are calling the manager second rate, fickle.

None of you were talking about Coutinho or Sturridge before Rodgers snapped them up. Fickle indeed.

  • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

“with massive upheavels to a lot of our rivals…….bla….bla…..bla” seriously? laughable and i guess you were doing same writing this….. am also open to be proven wrong

    • Erin says:

I know…. Me too. But I won’t accept excuses this year . Not in the transfer market, and NO more theories based on the last 2 months of the season dished out by BR brainwashed fanatics.

  • pino pino says:

where is reading? My only problem with BR is that he still plays allen and lucas together which costs him so many games doesnt learn at all.

  • David says:

I want BR to sign 1 or 2 defenders(maybe papadoulous or anderwield/squirera), a central midfielder(Eriksen), and a striker(like Luis Muriel/ Matri/ go to brazil and get a beta striker like Jo/Neitlon). This squad will really bring us trophy (if not trophies) this season. LFC pls dont be a sluggard in signing players before the end of the summer transfers

  • allaboutanfield says:

I wonder why we still haven’t signed the 2 Ajax players? With Spurs always close by.What is BR waiting for?

  • Ozred says:

I would have agreed that we’d improved our squad until the downing move today.

Also when you factor in Suarez won’t be playing, the actual net result is that our squad has been weakened.

Out from last years squad: Suarez, Downing, Carra, Suso, Reina, Shelvey
    In: Aspas, Mignolet, Alberto, Toure.

If we don’t bring players in soon we’re completely stuffed.

  • eoin says:

Rodgers is a god damn pathetic manager. Anyone who thinks otherwise is clueless

  • Craig says:

Do you know shankly cut 24 players in his first 18 months?
The players that have gone just didn’t have the right mentality needed for winning. BR will build his own squad and if suarez doesn’t show he wants to give 100% its the reserves for him
