LiverpoolKOLO Toure has expressed his delight at the added competition for places in Liverpool’s defence following the deadline day arrivals of Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho.

“It’s fantastic. It has increased the competition and everybody has to work really hard every day,” Toure said.

Toure’s exceptional start to the season was disrupted by an injured picked up in the Notts County game at Anfield and he subsequently missed out on the victory over champions Manchester United. Martin Skrtel deputised to great effect in that game and now Brendan Rodgers faces a tough decision regarding who partners Daniel Agger at Swansea on Monday.

“That is the only way we can make the team better and I’m glad we have signed two very good players.

“We know all about Mamadou Sakho, he is a very good player. Tiago has also come in from Portugal and is a really good defender as well.

“The competition will be really tough and we need to work extra hard. Nobody will be expecting to play, we’ll all have to fight, but I love the competition.

The Ivorian defender also expressed a desire to help his fellow centre halves by giving them the benefit of his many years in the game.

“I will always bring my experience. The competition will be fair and I will help them when they need it.

“We work as a team but I will do my best to show the manager I can keep my place. I enjoy the responsibility. With the experience I have, I can help them and show them the way.”
