LiverpoolACCORDING to the Daily MirrorLiverpool defender Martin Skrtel’s former club, Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg, are planning a bid to bring him back to the club in January.

Skrtel left Zenit for Liverpool in 2008, when he was brought to the club by former Reds boss Rafa Benitez, on a four-and-a-half deal for a fee of around £6.5 million.

Since his arrival, Skrtel has proved himself to be one of Liverpool’s most solid and consistent defenders, and has linked up brilliantly with recently appointed Liverpool vice-captain, Daniel Agger, at the heart of defence.

However, the 28 year old’s appearances started to dwindle last season, with Skrtel being dropped to the bench by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, to be replaced by veteran Jamie Carragher following the club’s shock FA Cup fourth round loss to Oldham Athletic.

The Slovakian’s omission raised question marks about his future at Anfield, and with Zenit sniffing around in the transfer summer window, many believed that Skrtel would be returning to Russia.

However, Skrtel has forced his way back into the first team this season, despite Rodgers shelling out £25 million on defensive duo Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori, and has made six appearances for Liverpool so far this season.

This resurgence, however, may further entice Zenit to make a move.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

If the price is right , it might tempt Liverpool to sell Skrtel.Liverpool need some injection of funds to buy a good quality creative midfielder to replace Lucas.

The fact is Skrtel has been our best defender in last three games and for numerous years him and Agger have been the best two defenders at club by a country mile, just a few mistakes last season and he was put on bench for most of the season.

Agger and Skrtel are the clubs two best defenders, Both should not be sold.

The only defensive players at club that need to be sold are : GK: B Jones RB: J Flanagan and CB: S Coates

Those three players are simply not good enough and should be sold and shipped out. And then replaced with two players: GK: A Mccarthy(23) Of Reading and CB: K Papadopolous(21) Of Schalke for combined total of 19M

As they will both be for now and future of club, but Skrtel should not be sold.
