NEWS late last week seemed to suggest that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had started to look around for a suitable replacement for Aly Cissokho in January, after the French left-back had yet failed to impress. Of course, the ‘rumours’ were probably created largely by an impending 14-day long international break but it did raise the question: when did half-a-dozen games become enough to make a judgement on a player?
In times gone by a player was given at least a season to show what he could do, particularly if moving up a league or two, or coming in from abroad. But as time has gone by it seems that it’s becoming more and more acceptable to make a final judgement on a player after shorter and shorter periods of time.
When I think back to the Valencia left-backs arrival at Anfield many fans were excited to see the 1 time capped French international after a poor run of form from Enrique at the back-end of last season and was deemed a more solid, reliable option in the left-back role.
But if anything, so far all Cissokho has done is strengthen Enrique’s position with the Spaniards full return from injury being very welcome indeed.
That’s not to say that the Frenchman is a terrible player though, nor that he should be shipped back to Spain as soon as possible. It takes time to adapt to a league, especially one that is so different to La Liga. While the quality of both leagues may be some of the highest in Europe, the intensity and tempo, week-in, week-out is not even comparable.

In an interview published on LFC.tv on Sunday, Cissokho referred to the quality and high-intensity of the Premier League, saying:
“It’s very engaged, and it’s non-stop. It’s surprising to see that even with those teams in mid-table, as well as those nearer the top of the table, there’s never a let up in the tempo, and they all play at the maximum level right up to the last minute of the match.”
So while it’s easy to expect a player to automatically come into a league or country and suddenly hit the ground running, that is something that very rarely happens and it has – and will – happen to better players than Cissokho.
It may well be that the Frenchman’s future is not at Anfield and if that is the case, then so be it but that doesn’t mean we should give up on him straight away. Much like with Borini, Allen and Aspas, no matter how long it takes a player to make an impact we should always make sure to give every Liverpool player our support, not laugh and jeer their every touch (which is rumoured to have happened at a recent home game).
Hopefully, Aly will soon find his feet and form and will provide some very real competition to the left-back spot that Enrique clearly needs but until that time he is a Liverpool player (albeit temporarily) and he deservers our support, while he is showing the right attitude and application.

I think we needed a backup to Enrique given his injury issues and cissokho was the only one we could get. I haven’t been too impressed, he seems technically rather poor, although he has hood energy and athleticism. I would really like us to go for coentrao, real quality and available.
