In a week without Premier League – or even European – football, the vacuum will always be filled with gossip and stories and this week was no different, with Liverpool being linked with a number of players over the past 7 days. Thankfully, we’ve compiled them all in the one place.
Starting on Sunday, and the Reds were linked to Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen, after the 24 year old Belgian stated that he more than likely wouldn’t be hanging around at the White Hart Lane club should the Champions League not be on the club’s fixture list next season.
The big defender has been one of Spur’s stand out players since he signed and while the club may be determined to hold on to him, they may find it increasingly difficult if their season doesn’t end with the Holy Grail of Europe’s elite competition.
With Daniel Levy’s track record however, it’s unlikely Liverpool would be able to match any purported transfer fee so one of Vertonghen’s former colleagues may be a more affordable option.
It has been reported since the summer that Liverpool were keen on Steven Caulker, and so it continues this week with reports that the club are still chasing after the 22 year old centre back, after a fine season in Wales since his move to Cardiff.
Should the Reds great form continue and the club achieve Champions League football, Caulker is unlikely to be the kind of marquee signing that the fans are looking for but the player’s age is likely to be a huge factor in any potential transfer.
Further up the field and Liverpool are being linked with Benfica’s Argentine wide-man, Nicolas Gaitan. The 26 year old was something of a regular entry in transfer rumour columns some years back but has seemingly become a forgotten man in the past few windows, after having previously been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea.
After another great season at Benfica though, the Argentine has emerged as a real contender for his country’s 23-man World Cup squad and if Liverpool are genuinely interested then they would be wise to attempt to snap him up before the tournament begins.
Rodgers will improve caulker like he has several others so sign him up
