Henderson in action for the Reds last season

Never mind the Luis Suarez saga, though for many it wasn’t a saga but a well constructed move away, Loic Remy’s mysterious non-arrival or many comings in and outgoings both potential and completed. The highlight of the summer was the World Cup. Whether you liked it or not, share the view that international football is dying, it WAS the biggest footballing event of the past few months. So let’s talk about it and the implications it may have on the coming season.

So let’s examine the Reds at the showdown in Brazil. Well, I think it will be fair to say that each and every one of them failed miserably. Some never got a sniff of action, some performed badly, Luis Suarez became a worldwide celebrity for, putting it mildly, wrong reasons. Thus leads us to English players.

Five Liverpool players started for England v Italy and Uruguay. I’m not a historian, but I’m not sure something similar ever happened. Should have been a proud moment for every LFC supporter. What a chance to boast around! Half of England’s team was made in Liverpool! Those Mancs who have been showing off with their trophies and number of England players for so long will finally shut up. A moment to bask in glory, isn’t it? And then came the reality… The worst World Cup for England team for fifty odd years. Made in Liverpool.

Let us have no doubts, it WAS the worst World Cup for England. Never mind some mythical things like “good performances” or a “new found flair”. They failed miserably and embarrassed the nation. Even under Capello in South Africa they fared better. They did make it out of the group at least. And Hodgson’s trust in Liverpool players was at the root of the problem. The team went out after 2 games and 50% of the starting XI were the Reds.

Liverpool

But we are not here to talk about England. They have their own problems, starting with ineffective governing body and Fulham class manager. We here talk Liverpool. And England’s World Cup failings affect the Reds. For those who are blind to the obvious: most of Liverpool’s English players aren’t good enough. I mean seriously, Glen Johnson is a joke of a right back. He is constantly out of position and can’t keep track of his players. Some might argue he is good going forward, but that’s not his primary objective. And never should be. Defenders must defend. End of story. 50 goals shipped in last season, equals not good enough to challenge.

Sturridge was OK, scored one, and so was Stevie. Many a pundit raved about Raheem, though personally I never saw anything out of an ordinary from him. If I were a Barcelona or a Bayern fan preparing to face LFC in the coming Champions League season, I wouldn’t be too scared. He’s a good lad with potential, nothing more. Having no Suarez around, means he scored none and assisted none. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see him do well this season, but doubt he will without the Uruguayan. I hope I’m wrong!

Hendo can run around. And so he did for England. He ran around. I’m not sure I remember anything from him this World Cup. One half decent shot v Italy maybe. I wasn’t convinced by Adam Lallana for Southampton. It’s a mystery to me why he was chosen in PFA’s best XI. He’s good on the ball, created and scored some. But £25 million after an anonymous World Cup? Not for me. Rickie Lambert did his reputation no harm whatsoever and so did Flanno. Mainly because they never played.

Would Sterling strike fear into the Barca's and Bayern's of this world?

Would Sterling strike fear into the Barca’s and Bayern’s of this world?

The nation relied on Liverpool players to produce for England. They failed. They didn’t have Luis Suarez around to make them look better than they really are. And they won’t this season. Sure Liverpool isn’t England and Rodgers is by no means Hodgson, so the judgements will be made. Trusting overpaid, overrated English players is wrong. And hopefully Brendan Rodgers won’t do that.

British fighting spirit is important. The “never give up” attitude. That’s what’s won LFC so many trophies over the years. But this lot are different. Stevie, Flanno and Lambert are of old school and still have it, Hendo may be called enthusiastic, but Johnson, Sterling and Sturridge? They down tools as soon as something goes against them and there’s no Luis Suarez or captain to drag them away from it. Last season was a miracle, LFC could have been found out in almost every game.

This year only a few will make this mistake.

so your comparing england’s world cup failures to liverpool wow blame hodgson my good man did u see the type off football england played horrible i agree with johnson but to come down on hendo and studge i disagree there

  • ss says:

hodgson couldnt manage liverpool players when he was their club manager either, patern forming here. Its either the players or hodgson, rogers seems to not have a problem so….

  • Akshay Saxena says:

are you an idiot ?? Nicky Cuzin.

the same players played the wole season for liverpool and look what they achieved. how paranoid are you to blame liverpool players for england’s shameful world cup. I suggest that you go learn things about football before writing stupid articles/

  • Simon says:

Bloody hell that was gloomy. Suarez has a great impact on the team, given, but the Liverpool players should not be judged on three games in a different system, with sub-standard tactics and sulking senior players pushing them out of position.
Sterling will continue to improve. Henderson will add goals and inspire his teammates with his work rate. Gerrard will have centre backs behind him who actually back him up and understand his weaknesses. As for Sturridge, he has been waiting his entire career to show why he should be the main and now he has his chance. My guess is he will take it.
The less said about Johnson the better, but cheer up. We weren’t a one man team with Owen, Gerrard or Torres. Nor will we prove to be with Suarez.

site in my blocked list along with that other crap Liverpool-kop

    • Ajay says:

      Agreed Mark Wilkinson.

    • massive ardon says:

Hurray, I was starting to think I was the only one thinking ths…. Someone should mention the fact that Hodgson and his style of management is an enemy of modern free flowing football… Time to evolve or #### off…

  • Ajay says:

Wow. You’re drunk. Go home. Aside from your criticism of Johnson, you are way off. Johnson not only is poor defensively, but his positioning is awful. He gives the ball away constantly. Makes poor decisions.
However, the others..no way. Sturridge needs to improve his decision making, but apart from that, he’s top notch. Gerrard is Gerrad, end of. And did you watch what Henderson and Sterling can do? They showed it in the city game last night. Lallana was brilliant last season for Southampton. And the season before. His flair, creativity and control of the football was second to none. Hodgson is probably one of the worst managers I’ve seen in England and it’s a joke that he’s in control of the national side. The FA have lost the plot. There is no way you can compare our lads playing for Pool with what happened at the World Cup. No way.

  • Iwantbox says:

    What a terrible article.

  • redman says:

yyour hatred for our club is much…..eish some losers

  • Dev says:

There are more players at Southampton’a training ground than there are Liverpool fans who agree with this article..,

  • massive ardon says:

Hodgson plays static positional football based on players holding rigidly to there position… LFC play fast exciting free flowing football… the differene is as big as white and black… get a grip …

  • Abraham says:

Objective article. Good read for the rational fans who don’t follow the sentiment of gamblers’ hope. Coutinho and Suarez glue the Liverpool unit together to produce the miracle performing team of last season, lets hope Coutinho can do so alone this term. By the way, Gerrard is the one to protect the CB and not them to protect him in the DM role.

  • SuaRed says:

    Objective…lol
This is absolute rubbish! Keyboard warrior touting bile!
Hogson was the problem with England not the Liverpool players! I should know! We had the clown as a manager!

    • Gaz says:

Agreed, nothing about trusting LFC players, it’s about giving them the freedom to actually play at their best. I’ve lost count of the number of pundits referencing Hodgsons tactical rigidity stifling the players ability. We saw this at Liverpool ourselves with Agger threatening to move club if he wasn’t allowed the freedom to move forward!

  • Matt says:

How did u get a job in the media hahaha

  • Nigerian Koprince says:

Good article, average lfc players. We dont learn our lessons. BR would go if we dnt make top4!

  • nakta says:

half witted article , Suarez scored because the team created chances & spaces and that guy never scored against the big clubs , e g Chelsea match which cost us the title , he was clearly frustrated within 20 mins of chelksi defence and time wasting tactics, but we will sure do miss him against Norwich lulfxxkinglul

  • gray says:

hodgsons trust in lfc players wasn’t the problem, roy himself was the problem. Sturridge, Sterling, Hendo and gerrard where selected on good form. johnson is a mystery to me.

it was roys slow build up and no closing down that made every player in the squad look bad. hes a cr*p manager that has at times stumbled upon moderate success.

the fact that your seeminly a liverpool fan depresses the sh*t out of me.

  • stevie says:

Utter pants nicky. We almost won the league with a team of 6 englishmen playing regularly

  • James says:

I don’t mind the criticism, and there are some salient points especially on Johnson, but to pretend that this is objective journalism is laughable. If you want to paint the Liverpool players as failures fair enough, the England team performed abysmally, but did the other 8-10 England players who did participate give a better account of themselves? Nope. If the entire squad performs poorly the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the manager, who we all knew going into the tournament was subpar.

  • Shaun Martin says:

An interesting article but not objective. I think most people who watch football agree that Johnson is not a right back, more a right sided midfielder.

What made Liverpool so good last year was the pace and variety of our attack, none of which England played. The build up was too slow and we had no plan once teams got organised, and that goes down to what they were told to do.

To say that Henderson just runs around is totally disrespectful about a player who continues to improve and Sterling is a very direct runner both on and off the ball, causing quality players a lot of problems.

The journalist of this article may be even more anti Liverpool soon if the likes of Lallana stay in the England side as it may be 6 or 7 players for the Euros.

For England it is simple, get them organised when we don’t have the ball, and let the leash off when we attack, we have some quality players, we just need to let them play.

  • Bash says:

Agree with Johnson being dire.. But England problem is Hodgson picking Baines n Jagielka (no CL experience, not much experience at top level footy) over Cole and Terry especially when Chelsea done well defensively 3 months prior to World Cup.. Making WelBlack and Johnson 1st choice???
Rooney and WelBlack should’ve been subs, should’ve started Lallana and Barkley….
    LFC players weren’t to blame…
Every country’s golden boys do the job when it matters .. Rodriguez Muller Sanchez Shaqiri Neymar Messi etc etc but 3 World Cup finals later Rooney can boast 1 measly crappy tap in.. That guys a joke and has cost England.
