Liverpool Player Ratings vs Middlesbrough

|

Goalkeeper/Defence

Simon Mignolet – Bizarrely, the Belgian was retained for the cup match meaning that every man and his dog must be beginning to wonder what the hell Brad Jones is even retained for. Either way, another opportunity for Mignolet to impose himself and to show he has what it takes and what more could a ‘keeper who’s supposedly a strong shot-stopper need than a penalty shootout? He fluffed his lines again, saving 1 of 15 penalties, getting his hand to a few others but overall failing to give fans any kind of confidence in him even at the one thing he is meant to be good at. Rating – 5

Javier Manquillo – It is important to remember that Manquillo is still a kid. Remember this when he just ‘does the job’ as he did last night; nothing spectacular but he got the job done and look solid once again. Rating – 6

Kolo Toure – Not the best game we’ve ever seen from Toure, nor the worst but that’s not a great thing either. Put his penalty away with aplomb but looked slow and shaky alongside Sakho. Will probably not get many opportunities this season again. Rating – 5

Mamadou Sakho – A year ago, we signed Sakho as the answer to all of our defensive ails. 12 months on and he’s been pushed down to cup player. He has so much offer, which is why it’s so infuriating to see him in this role but he once again looked hugely suspect at times, only bettering his partner after a few solid tackles and looked more assured on the ball. Rating – 6

Jose Enrique – Thank God he’s back, eh? You may cringe at some of the defensive lapses but the man is entertaining and a quality attacking left-back. Got forward even more than Alberto has in the past few weeks and contributed a great deal to the few moments of genuine threat that Liverpool’s attack posed. Will push Moreno for a start on Saturday.  Rating – 7

Only 6 for Lucas? The guy was excellent and showed Rodgers what a defensive midfielder does. Lambert deserved 4 but to suggest that there’s more to come from him is hopeful to say the least.
