Lallana believes Liverpool must work collectively to replace Steven Gerrard

With his career at Anfield set to end in little over a fortnight, Steven Gerrard rolled back the years on Sunday to pull back a last minute goal, in the manner most Liverpool fans had become accustomed to over his time at the club.

It’s been a tough 18 months for the Liverpool legend, who has seen his ability to influence the side wane, as his career draws to a close. Something which had a big influence on his decision to move to the MLS once the current season is over.

But despite his decreasing powers, Liverpool new-boy Adam Lallana believes that no single player can replace Steven Gerrard, that it will take a collective effort from the whole team next season to ensure that the captain is replaced.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Lallana said: “He’s come up with a goal here today [Sunday] – something he’s done his entire career.

“I don’t think the Premier League or Liverpool realise what we’re going to miss out on next season.

“I feel we’re all going to have to give an extra percentage [to fill the gap]. We all need to dig in and work hard because he is irreplaceable, really.

“I feel the best way to replace him is not just through one certain individual; it’s going to be a combination of every single player. He’s proved today and last week [against QPR], coming up with a goal, what a man he is and what a player he is for this club.”

Liverpool now face two potentially tricky games against Crystal Palace next Saturday evening, before a visit to Stoke on the final day of the season; two games where the players, Lallana included, can begin to show that they have what it takes to step up in the absence of the current club captain, and Liverpool legend Gerrard.
