Martinez is reportedly a target for the Reds in the summer

According to El Confidential, Liverpool are reportedly looking for defensive reinforcements in the summer, and Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez is the man targeted to help solve the club’s instabilities at the back.

The 23 year old has been a first team player at the Spanish side since 2011 and has made 142 appearances in the past 4 seasons at the club, making his international debut in 2013 and has attracted the attention of both Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past 12 months, meaning Liverpool will have some competition for the players signature.

However, one thing that may swing in Liverpool’s favour is the fact that the Reds have slowly been building up a new contingent of young Spanish stars and Liverpool could give him a much more likely chance of getting regular first team football than he’d get at either the Bernabeu or Nou Camp.

There is no doubting Martinez is at top young defender, and an experienced one at that, but it’s doubtful that he’d be able to hold down a regular spot at either side at such a young age, despite his experience.

The Spanish website are, however, reporting that Liverpool are in a good position to get the player, as he is keen to team up with Javi Manquillo and Alberto Moreno – two players he has played with regularly for Spain U21s.

Whether Liverpool get him or not is another matter but he would be in a much more promising bracket of players than those we’ve been linked to recently.

What are your thoughts on Martinez, would he improve Liverpool’s defence? Let us know how you’d feel about signing the player below.

Defensive instabilities at Liverpool are caused by poor management and coaching from Rodgers, Pascoe and Marsh.
