At a time when Liverpool were bereft of even decent centre backs, oftentimes Mark Wright stood out as a beacon of brief hope for Reds’ fans during a tumultuous ’90s.
Wright was a good centre back, a leader and a vocal one at that, and things may have been much worse for Liverpool without Wright, defensively, under the likes of Graeme Souness and Roy Evans.
So, perhaps Liverpool fans should heed Wright’s advice, regarding a certain Kolo Toure. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Wright said: “I think he’s a true professional.
“[He] does everything that’s asked of him, plays at right-back, centre-half, sweeper, wherever, he gives his all.
“He comes across as a fantastic pro and a nice man.
“You need to be giving that experience out and giving an opinion and he seems to me one of these people who are liked in the dressing room and that’s important as well.”
Coming from a man that played over 200 games for Liverpool, amassing 45 England caps in an injury-prone career, the 51 year old is a man that probably knows what he’s talking about, as well.
Toure didn’t have the best of first seasons at Anfield, and with a collection of expensive centre backs at the club last season, Toure found himself struggling to get a game, whilst also missing over a month during the African Cup of Nations.
With a player like Toure though, his importance to a team and squad is often more prevalent off the field, and with Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson moving on, he remains one of few players of 30 years of age or older currently at Anfield. Something which could prove to be of great importance in what promises to be a tough season for the team.
