Liverpool’s summer starts to shape up

Firmino looks to be a great signing no? That is great news and another step in the right direction. Snapping up a talented player quickly and with minimum fuss.  I don’t know much about the lad, but if the YouTube videos and statistics are to be believed, he will be a great addition. More than that he has got me, and the internet, excited for Liverpool again!  There is a little more hope for the future with this guy in the squad.

The manner in which Liverpool is going about their business so far has really impressed me. So far we have got everyone we wanted this summer, a welcome change from the Sanchez (and too many others) debacle.

If reports are to believed then Nathaniel Clyne should also soon be on his way. This is a player that I really like, but I would love to hear your opinions on. He would fill a position that we obviously need filled. Meanwhile our makeshift right-back, Emre Can continues to impress on international duty with the U21’s.  I’m really hoping for a big season from him next year, with a move back into the midfield.

In more good news the club seems to be focusing on adding another striker. Though Firmino should add goals and assists to the lineup, the club is desperately in need of firepower. We all love Sturridge, but with the problems he has faced with injuries we need a back up we can rely on, and this more than any position is in desperate need of quick attention.

We were forced in to a panic buy last year with Balotelli, and we can’t afford to make the same mistake again. While Ings has always impressed me, we need a proven scorer to play with, or in Sturridge’s place. My favorite of the rumors is Bacca (if we can’t get Ibrahamovic 😉 ). If we can make as quick of work with his signing as we did with Firmino I may just have to take back anything I have ever said about Brendan and FSG.

One position commonly touted as a problem area is a defensive midfielder. Lucas has filled that position well over the last years and has always been a favorite of mine. He did struggle with injuries but it seemed in that one good run we had last season that he was key to the team. Am I wrong? Or would a healthy Lucas solve the DM problem? What other players would you like to see in the spot?

I wrote last week on the need for change in the FSG and Brendan’s system. Spending big money on what looks like a great player is exactly what needed to happen. Firmino is young, and while less proven than others, he certainly shows more realized potential than Markovic, for example. Buying a proven talent is exactly what we need to do, and with the signing of James Milner, this summer is looking to be headed in the right direction.

A couple more well executed signings and I will be very confident in our ability to retake the top four, though my head is filled with mouthwatering dreams of Coutinho and Firmino together at the moment. And certainly Adam Lallana will have a better season as well, there is more to come from him.

There is hope for next season, as the wait for Liverpool’s return continues. And I for one can’t wait to for preseason to begin!
