Rushie and LFC players with Big Issue participants
LFC’s official charity, Liverpool FC Foundation, visited The Big Issue yesterday to stage a mini football tournament with Brisbane’s homeless community.
Foundation community coaches delivered coaching clinics in Wakerley Park for more than 50 adults followed by a mini football tournament to help promote the values of friendship, respect and etiquette.
LFC Ambassadors, Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler also dropped by to cheer on the participants, present the trophy to the winning team and LFC themed goodie bags to everyone who took part.
The Big Issue were also provided with tickets to attend the Reds game against Brisbane Roar at the Suncorp Stadium.
The Big Issue, which is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, helps to support and create job opportunities for homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people.
They run social enterprises to create employment for people who are unable to access mainstream jobs. These enterprises operate much like traditional businesses, except all revenue is put back into the enterprises for the benefit of the individuals involved and broader community.
Robbie Fowler said: “Ian and I had a great time taking part in the coaching sessions and watching the football tournament. It was brilliant to see everyone getting stuck in and really enjoying themselves.”
Andrea Cooper, Head of Liverpool FC Foundation, added: “The Big Issue is such a fantastic charity and one which we are proud to be supporting today. It was great to see so many men and women engaging in and enjoying sport together proving that football really does have the power to bring communities together and inspire positive change.”
