Skrtel was a rock again against Arsenal last night

GK/Defence

Simon Mignolet – Mignolet has come on in leaps and bounds since last season and his confidence is clearly growing this season too. Against Arsenal he had little to do in the first half but was called into action in the second. All the talk may have been about an improved Petr Cech but Mignolet was easily his equal. Rating – 8

Dejan Lovren – It’s great seeing a previously maligned centre back turn things around and that’s exactly what Lovren continued to do against Arsenal in what many are calling his best display in a Red shirt. That’s up for debate but he was solid and calm; he and Martin are starting to look the part. Rating – 7

Martin Skrtel – While all the talk after the match was of what might have been and how underrated Lucas Leiva is, another perpetually underrated (and we’ll keep saying it until it isn’t true!) player is Skrtel. He was commanding in the first half, leading his back four well and came out on top in a nervy second half, making several inch-perfect clearances to ensure Arsenal had few real chances at goal. Rating – 8

Nathaniel Clyne – Clyne is really beginning to remind Reds what a real right back looks like – solid defensively, comfortable in possession, the new boy is even starting to make forays into the opposition half with real intent. A great signing all round and an absolute bargain. Rating – 7.5

Joe Gomez – While both Clyne and Milner could be contenders for ‘bargain of the season’, due to their respective low (or non-existent) transfer/signing on fees, both are also known quantities. In Gomez’s case, few had any idea who the youngster was before we signed him and even fewer could’ve predicted how quickly he would adapt to this level. At present, Liverpool could have a first choice left back for the next decade, at least! Gomez made short work of keeping Ozil quiet and later Sanchez, to the extent that he drifted to the opposite side late in the second half looking to make an impact. Rating – 8.5 Man of the Match

Good news for LFC fans. The owners kept Rodgers and didn’t sign Klopp as they have already decided Gerrard will be next manager after his 18 month stint at LA Galaxy. As there is a 50-50 chance of champions league LFC will need Gerrards reputation and world wide respect to bring high profile players.
