Ronald Koeman

Having mentioned Ronald Koeman as an example for De Boer, he should also be listed as a possible managerial target for Liverpool post-Rodgers. Liverpool have had a tendency to sign players from Southampton in the last couple of years, so why not the manager?

Koeman has done a terrific job at Southampton, especially in the chaotic summer of 2014, with numerous players including Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers and many more shipped out, along with the previous manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Koeman responded by bringing in a raft of replacements to re-strengthen the squad, such as Graziano Pelle, Fraser Forster, Dusan Tadic, Shane Long and others.

Despite being tipped for relegation by some, Southampton performed brilliantly last season, securing a top seven finish in the Premier League. Koeman proved he could handle major transition and rebuild a successful side quickly and effectively, in contrast to Rodgers last season at Liverpool.

Koeman’s Southampton are incredibly tough to beat with a tight defence, something Liverpool have lacked since Kenny Dalglish was in charge. There may well be plenty of further movement in the next few years as Liverpool remain far from the finished article, and Koeman could handle that next step.

The 52 year old Dutchman has enjoyed success elsewhere aside from Southampton, particularly with Ajax, PSV and Valencia, but Liverpool would be his greatest managerial role to date.
