Player Ratings: LIVERPOOL 1-1 Southampton

|
Sakho was the standout in the Reds' defence tonight

The French centre back was in good form again for Liverpool

GK/Defence

Simon Mignolet – Little to do really, in Klopp’s first Premier League game at Anfield but his kicking under pressure and slow distribution again left Liverpool looking slow in breaking on the away side. Something that needs improving quickly. Rating – 6

Nathaniel Clyne – Caught out of position a few times and his final ball in the final third was a little lacking at times. Showed great speed to get back late in the second half when Southampton had a 2v2 situation. Rating – 6

Martin Skrtel – A further improvement on his display in the week, but was up against a slightly ‘slower’ opposition forward in Graziano Pelle. Still, between himself and Sakho they managed to keep one of the Premier League’s top centre forwards very quiet. Rating – 6.5

Mamadou Sakho – Plenty of promise again from Sakho, who looked much more confident in possession and did some top class defensive work. It looks as if he and Skrtel may well be developing a partnership, at long last. Of course, there’s the Southampton goal that still raises questions, but considering that came from a set-piece, there are a number of other players that are held accountable for that. Rating – 7

Alberto Moreno – Superb effort again from Moreno, who excelled at both ends. His final ball needs a hell of a lot more work though, as his crosses are often imprecise, whilst his shooting is.. erratic, at best. His tackle in the second half was inch-perfect; a supremely timed effort that even Sami Hyypia would’ve been proud of. Rating – 7

The result was inspiring in a very subtle way, considering Henderson, Sturridge , Ings were not even in the team. We have to give time to our Rockstar and his team. We are still learning how to press, Milner’s foul which lead to Southampton equalizer is prime example that we are still a long way to perfect Gegenpressing. Southampton has proven what they can do with set pieces and they did exactly that when they got the opportunity. Our defense has become solid now, no need to be stupid in the midfield with four to six minutes left. With Gegenpressing it is very important we get a goal in the first ten or fifteen minutes, lets not forget the referees were very kind yesterday there were some fouls which were let go yesterday. However the good news is both Benteke and Firminho are looking good, Let’s pray that Sturridge comes back as soon as possible atleast against Chelsea, cant wait to crush the west Londoners.
