Liverpool star Molby says Benteke has to start against Leicester

After a fairly ineffective peformance in many of his previous games, the clamouring to have Benteke taken out of the starting lineup at Watford was palpable.

As it turned out the front three, with Firmino as the false nine, was even more ineffective against Watford and it’s highly likely that Jurgen Klopp will play about with his setup against Leicester and that could see Benteke brought back into the fold for his physical presence.

It’s a train of thought that Reds legend, Jan Molby, gets right behind. The former Liverpool midfielder believes that Benteke must start against Leicester on Boxing Day.

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo on Wednesday, Jan said: “When you’re not playing well – and Liverpool certainly aren’t – it’s not the time to be trying new things or playing people out of position. The false nine and front three just didn’t work against Watford.

“Benteke will give Liverpool someone to hit and a way of playing.

“It has the makings of a superb game which could just get wild and out of control. At that stage Liverpool will want a situation where they can get the ball into Benteke’s feet and calm the game down a bit for a while.”

As we saw against Watford, it’s hard to implement the same tactics that worked so well against the likes of Chelsea and Man City, when those same tactics are being used against you. It’s even harder when the players being used are putting in much less than the opposition.

Molby continued: “We were also out-run, physically bullied and they even looked the better technical side at times.

“There weren’t even any personal performances from individual players you could point to as positives or redeeming features.

“I’m not a great believer in just forgetting a result and moving on but in this case I think that’s just what we’ve going to have to do.”

And while it’s true that Liverpool were terrible and embarrassingly out run and fought, the result must be forgotten and the team must put every effort into getting a result at Anfield on Boxing Day.
