Big Sami scoring against Bolton

5. Liverpool 3 Bolton Wanderers 1 (2003)

Liverpool’s previous season had fallen off a cliff, and they didn’t start this campaign in convincing fashion either, with only five wins in sixteen matches coming into the clash with Sam Allardyce’s Bolton.

However, the Reds managed to perform on the festive day, scoring peculiarly through three headed goals from Sami Hyypia, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Vladimir Smicer. Henrik Pedersen netted for Bolton, but it was merely a consolation.

Liverpool’s inconsistent form continued into 2004, but they did manage to scrape fourth spot and Champions League football. However, it wasn’t enough to save Gerard Houllier, who was replaced by Rafael Benitez.
