Steven Gerrard once against saves Liverpool’s blushes

4. Derby County 1 Liverpool 2 (2007)

This match may not seem significant or certainly cause for celebration, given Derby’s nightmare season in the Premier League, where they finished with the lowest points tally in Premier League history, only one win in 38 matches, and the quickest relegation ever. Even Liverpool thrashed them 6-0 at Anfield in September, which was part of an encouraging run of form coming into Christmas, with only two defeats, although six draws were hampering thoughts of a title challenge.

Nevertheless, there was plenty of drama in this game as the bottom team threatened to frustrate Benitez’s side further, with Jay McEveley cancelling out Fernando Torres’ early goal.

Yet with barely minutes left captain Steven Gerrard spared Liverpool’s blushes yet again by pouncing after Torres was denied by Derby goalkeeper Lewis Price.

Gerrard himself hit the bar earlier in the game, while Liverpool had plenty of other chances to make the scoreline comfortable, but in the end they left it late to secure the three points.

Sadly, Liverpool failed to mount an assault on the title as a winless January meant they had to settle for a top four finish, despite a good end to the season.
