Can and Lucas were in great form tonight

Midfield

Lucas Leiva – The longest-serving current player may have just found a new niche for himself as a centre back. It worked with Javier Mascherano at Barcelona. And, while we’re not attempting to compare the two, there’s no reason Lucas couldn’t fill in there on tonight’s showing. Assured, calm and managed to bring leadership to a (mostly) previously leaderless back line. Excellent in all areas. Rating – 8

Emre Can – Can has grown into his central midfield role more in recent games and after Lucas dropped into defence he took on the mantle of main man, barking commands at Allen and Milner whilst contributing well at both ends. Rating – 7

Joe Allen – Had Joe managed a goal, we’d have called this his best game in a Liverpool shirt. And while there’ll be debates as to whether or not he meant that pass, we’re going to give it to him, based purely on the fact he was the Reds’ standout player. Rating – 8.5 Man of the Match
