The Frenchman again caused a lot of his own problems

GK/Defence

Simon Mignolet – Despite Augsburg looking quite dangerous for the entire 90 minutes, Mignolet only had a couple of saves to make. He did well enough in that respect, but he still doesn’t inspire confidence. One moment in the second half saw him mis-communicate with Moreno, who played the ball back into the box, whilst Mignolet strayed off his line. Rating – 5

Nathaniel Clyne – Not bad from Clyne, gave as good as he got at both ends but one scary moment late on saw him beaten from a cross, which gave Augsburg a great chance. Thankfully, it didn’t go in. Rating – 6.5

Kolo ToureApart from a few typically amusing Kolo moments, he was relatively solid throughout, despite Augsburg looking quite dangerous. The home side penetrated Liverpool far too many times, but that owed as much to the midfield as the defence. Rating 6.5

Mamadou Sakho – Much like Mignolet, Sakho is often the architect of his own problems, and such was the case tonight. He wasn’t particularly bad but his worrying moments cannot be ignored. Making easy situations difficult and headers that often go straight up in the air. Much improvement and greater command of his defence is needed for the second leg. Rating – 6

Alberto Moreno – The Spaniard provided a good overlap in the home side’s half but his final ball continues to frustrate. With some improvement in that regard, he’d be good for double figures assists. At the other end however, he continues to add to a number of defensive issues with his lapses in concentration. Rating – 6
