GK/Defence
Simon Mignolet – Did little wrong and his distribution was good in the second half, constantly allowing his teammates to break quickly. Rating – 6
Nathaniel Clyne – Improved in the second half and got a handle on the excellent Reus. Was partly culpable for one of Dortmund’s goals but redeemed himself with his support of the onslaught in the second half. Rating – 7
Dejan Lovren – If there was any doubt who our best centre back is, there surely isn’t anymore. On a night when his defensive teammates were all over the place in the first half, Lovren stood firm and did all he could. The whole team pushed their games to a new level in the second half but they have Lovren to thank for still being in it. His winning goal was the icing on the cake and thoroughly deserved. What a turnaround in his Anfield career, eh. Rating – 8 Man of the Match
Mamadou Sakho – We’re being generous with this rating but Sakho scored the goal that levelled the scores on the night, so he gets it for that, if for nothing else. Elsewhere, he was a defensive accident waiting to happen. And he did, three times. He may not have been directly responsible for all three goals, but he played a part and failed to keep with the defensive line constantly, allowing Dortmund to avoid obvious offsides. Those complaints are for another day though, an excellent contribution at the other end is all that matters on nights like that. Rating – 7
Alberto Moreno – There were some blaming the Spaniard for Dortmund’s first goal on the night but the fact of the matter is, he simply got nowhere near a terrible pass from his team mate and the away side broke and scored. He wasn’t anywhere near his standards that we witnessed against Stoke on Sunday but he, as always, was of much more use breaking in attack. Rating – 6.5
