Portuguese newspaper Abola have revealed that Liverpool were among the first teams to “express an interest” in Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan when the Armenian star rejected a new contract to stay at the German club.

The 27 year old’s contract expires next summer and speculation has been rife that Manchester United, Arsenal, Juventus and the Reds are all interested in purchasing the player before the start of the season.

Liverpool have been interested in the attacking midfielder for a number of seasons and the player was bought by Jurgen Klopp when he was at Borussia Dortmund after Mkhitaryan rejected a move to Anfield.

It is unlikely though that despite the Reds interest he will move to Anfield as Mkhitaryan has expressed his preference for current Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel style of play over his previous boss as he believes the counter-pressing style employed by Klopp did not suit his game. The 23 goals and the staggering 30 assists he made last season under Tuchel are certainly his best figures since moving to Dortmund.
