Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi has joined Dutch club NEC Nijmegen on loan for the rest of the season, the Liverpool Echo are reporting. The Nigerian joined the Reds last summer before being immediately sent out on loan to FSV Frankfurt in the German second division. He becomes the third young player to leave the Reds on loan this week after Ryan Kent joined Barnsley and Allan Rodrigues de Souza joined Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.

18 year old Awoniyi did not have a great time out on loan at Frankfurt previously and scored just one goal in 14 appearances, mostly making appearances from the bench. In the Netherlands, he will be joining a club managed by a Klopp ally Peter Hyballa, a German who managed Borussia Dortmund’s Under 19 side for three seasons when the Reds boss was manager.

Hyballa may be able to get the most out of Awoniyi as he specialises in developing young players, much like Klopp’s former cohort David Wagner, who will be managing keeper Danny Ward during his loan spell at Huddersfield Town.
