Sporting Lisbon are interested in signing Lazar Markovic, according to the Portuguese newspaper Record. The Serbian has returned to Liverpool for preseason training and he will be given a chance to impress manager Jurgen Klopp before a decision is made on his future.

Sporting manager Jorge Jesus is however hopeful of bringing the player back to Lisbon. Jesus controversially moved across the city last season after he became Sporting’s manager after a six year spell at Benfica. At Benfica he managed Markovic and is a huge admirer of the winger’s abilities.

The 22 year old cost £20m from Benfica in 2014 but has failed to establish himself at Anfield. He struggled for fitness last season with a hamstring injury hindering the amount of playing time he got whilst out on loan at Turkish side Fenerbahce. The biggest stumbling block according to Record is Markovic’s wages of €4million a year would be prohibitive, and they would need Liverpool to pick up a large part of the wages.
