Liverpool centre back Joel Matip has told the Liverpool Echo he is looking forward to finally walking out at Anfield, after making the free transfer move from Schalke 04 in the summer.

Construction work has been ongoing at the Reds’ home ground all summer as the main stand is completed to increase the capacity to 54,000. To aid the completion of the stand, the Reds requested that the Premier League match against Burnley be switched from Anfield to Turfmoor leading to Liverpool starting the league campaign with three away matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are now preparing for their first home match of the season against Leicester City on Saturday night, and Matip is excited by the prospect of walking out at Anfield:

“I’ve been waiting the whole pre-season to make my first steps at the stadium. I think Liverpool is famous for its stadium, for its atmosphere. It will be a great atmosphere and I’ll be happy when I can play there. To hear ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ for the first time at the stadium will be a special moment and I will enjoy it.”

Matip revealed that Jurgen Klopp’s former club Borussia Dortmund also sung the anthem during some of their home games but he expects the Reds version to be the best:

“Dortmund, sometimes they sing, but they’re not really famous for this, Liverpool is famous for this song and the atmosphere at the stadium. It will be something else.”
