Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has been speaking about a conversation he had with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp before he signed a new contract back in January.

The Belgian international came in for criticism about his performances last season but speculation about his future was put to rest when he signed a new five year deal to stay at Anfield. At the time Klopp praised Mignolet for his abilities and signalled his intention to keep the player for the long term but the 28 year old told the Liverpool Echo, he also mentioned that he would be bringing in competition during the summer:

“When I signed that new contract the club said that there would be fresh competition. That is the normal thing – that you have three competitive goalkeepers.”

Klopp signed Loris Karius from Mainz for £4.7million and brought in Alex Manninger on a free transfer in the summer transfer window but Karius picked up hand injury during the preseason match against Chelsea before the start of the season leaving Mignolet as undisputed first choice. The German has now regained full fitness to give the Reds number 22 a rival for his starting place. The Echo believe however Jurgen Klopp will keep Mignolet in goal against Leiester City on Saturday with Karius having to settle for a place on the bench.
