Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski has revealed that he was in “advanced” talks about a transfer to Liverpool before he eventually made his move to Naples.

The Polish international had been linked consistently with a move to Anfield throughout the summer, and was even seen wearing a Liverpool shirt, but after the deal with the Reds failed to materialise, he joined Napoli in August and he now says he has happy he made the move. Talking to the Polish news publication Sportowefakty, Zielinski said:

“With Liverpool, it did not work out, it’s hard. Talks with Liverpool had been advanced. But I’m glad that I got to Napoli. It’s one of the best teams.”

Whether the Reds were unwilling to meet Udinese’s valuation of the player or they were more keen on other targets, it’s unclear. The signing of Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle for £25million seems likely to have put the stop to Zielinski’s move to Anfield.

It must be said however the Liverpool Echo have reported that the Reds are interested in signing another central midfielder with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Mahmoud Dahoud still believed to be a target for Jurgen Klopp next summer.
