Ex Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has backed Jurgen Klopp to win trophies as Liverpool manager before he eventually departs the club.

The Frenchman, who was in charge at Anfield between 1998 and 2004, believes Klopp could win titles in the space of two years. He told the Daily Express.

“Maybe he needs another year to win – we rebuilt in 1999 and had success in 2001. But he will win trophies for Liverpool. He will get there. I have no doubt. He is a true competitor and that transfers to players.”

Houllier famously won a cup treble of the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup in 2001 and followed that up with a second place finish in 2002. He however left in 2004 after a troubled final campaign.

In his first year at Anfield, Klopp has already helped the Reds reach two cup finals but he will no doubt be keen on going one step further and lifting silverware in the not too distant future to firmly establish his credentials in English football. Without European competition this season, he can focus both on the league and domestic cup trophies without players needing to be rested which could prove crucial by the end of the season.
