Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby believes it is very unlikely that manager Jurgen Klopp will drop goalkeeper Loris Karius in favour of Simon Mignolet for the derby match against Manchester United on Monday.

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Molby does not believe dropping the 23 year old would send out the right signals and that Mignolet’s recent comments that he believes he has a chance of starting against United are optimistic:

“Klopp faces a decision over who to play in goal, but I would be amazed if Simon Mignolet is recalled. What would be the point of giving Loris Karius a run in the side if you’re already thinking about bringing Mignolet back for a big game? Mind you, I can’t blame Mignolet for talking up his own chances. He’s clearly eager to play – and you can bet he’ll be ready.”

Mignolet told the Belgian media yesterday that it hurt him being dropped for the last two league matches against Hull City and Swansea City but was hopeful of returning to the starting eleven against United. After hardly putting a foot wrong at the start of this season, Mignolet may be feeling harshly treated by Klopp but, according to Molby, the Reds boss looks to have made up his mind on his number one keeper, for the time being at least.
