Speaking to Talksport, Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson has revealed how he thinks Liverpool can win the league this season.
The Reds have been in good form so far in the Premier League and currently trail table-toppers Chelsea by just a point having beaten the likes of Arsenal and the Blues so far this season.
Their attacking play in particular has been the thing to draw the most acclaim from onlookers this season with them scoring more goals than anyone else in the league up until now but, in stark contrast, their defence has drawn a fair bit of criticism.
In recent weeks the club have kept clean sheets against Southampton and Sunderland but for Merson, they need to do more if they are to lift a long awaited league title in May, and that should come in the form of Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk.
‘Merse’ said:
“For me, I think if Liverpool get together and go and buy Van Dijk for £50 million in January, they will take some beating.
“They’ve got the firepower going forward, I just don’t think they’ve got it at the back.
“I know they’ve done it this season so far, but defensively they aren’t going to be good enough [against the big teams].
“But if they can go out and get Van Dijk, I think £50 million, that nearly wins you the Premier League.”
Van Dijk has seen many praise him this season for his performances for the Saints and the former Villa man clearly thinks if the Reds get him in, the title could really be theirs.
