Liverpool defender Joel Matip believes the quality of the Premier League stands out compared to playing in the German Bundesliga.

The Cameroonian international was born in Germany and made his way through the youth ranks of Schalke before playing for the senior side but the 25 year old told the Liverpool Echo that despite the fact there is so many competitive sides playing in England, he already feels at home with the Reds:

“It’s an honour and a joy to play for Liverpool. It’s a great club. I’ve been able to help the team get some good results and I am really happy to be here. The biggest difference compared to the Bundesliga is that there are so many teams playing for the title. There is so much quality.”

The Reds managed only their second clean sheet in the league last weekend against Southampton, but both have come in 0-0 draws. Still, Matip’s performances for Liverpool this season have been nothing short of exemplary.

His calmness and ability to play the ball out from the back has already made him a firm favourite among Reds fans, and as long he stays fit, the improvement of the defence that has been evident over the last few games will hopefully lead to more shut outs in the coming weeks.
