Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says he is determined to fight his way back into manager Jurgen Klopp’s first team plans.

The Belgian international only appearance in the last eight games has come in the EFL Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur last month after Loris Karius took over the gloves, and Mignolet told Limburg TV (translated by TeamTalk.com) that he won’t accept being number two:

“I’ve never been on the bench in my career! I don’t want that and I won’t accept it either. I will keep fighting to return as the first-choice goalkeeper.”

The 28 year old said that despite his lack of game time, he has not considered leaving the Reds and is focused on staying at Anfield for the time being:

“It’s not right [to suggest leaving Liverpool] – that’s for the future. I am fully focused on Liverpool.”

Mignolet started the season as number one due to Karius’s hand injury which kept the German out for two months, but a strong indication of the present pecking order at Anfield came when Mignolet was dropped for the starting eleven one match after Karius’s return to full fitness. It seems it will take a lot for the Belgian to convince Jurgen Klopp that he deserves another shot as a first team regular.
