According to the Italian outlet Calciomercato, Liverpool are set to miss out on any deal for Dries Mertens with him set to sign a new deal with Napoli.

The Belgian winger has been in fine form this season for the Serie A side and now looks set to put pen to paper in a deal that will reportedly take his release clause to €40 million.

The rapid wide-man had been linked with a move to Liverpool along with the likes of Manchester United by the report but it now appears both clubs will have to look elsewhere to bolster that area in their squads.

With Sadio Mane leaving for the African Cup of Nations in 2017 the Reds need to be considering moves for extra options out wide and so we’re sure to see plenty of other names linked over the course of the coming weeks.

Is Mertens a big miss, Reds? Let us know below!
