We’ve grown used to the Reds missing targets in recent weeks after a January window that saw us sign no-one.

Indeed, many have put that as the factor behind why our title challenge has gone so awry this season but it appears that this problem is more than just a one-off thing – gulp.

That’s because in speaking to the Evening Times the Reds’ former boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed just how close he was to signing Virgil Van Dijk for the club.

Van Dijk – now a hugely impressive defender at Southampton – could have joined the Reds from Celtic but instead we missed out.

And, with our defence a problem then, too, surely we could have won the league had he signed given we all know how good he is now.

It’s another missed opportunity, though, and here’s what Rodgers had to say about it:

“Virgil van Dijk could have jumped from Celtic to a Liverpool. Some clubs will want to see the players tested at certain arenas first.

“But if there is enough belief in the player then that counts. The key for scouting is trying to predict when the player is peaking.

“You could see with Van Dijk that he was quick, strong, good on the ball and decent in the air

“There is maybe an issue with scouts.

“When I was at Liverpool I asked about van Dijk and he was at Groningen and then at Celtic. But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time.”
