It may be a fair time ago now but Sir Martin Broughton is revealing now just what went on when Rafael Benitez left Liverpool.

The Spanish manager will always be held in high regard by the club for the way he helped us win the Champions League as well as the FA Cup and our title challenge in 2008/09 in particular.

Things ended sourly, though, with him clearly not seeing eye to eye with Tom Hicks and George Gillett before moving off to be replaced by Roy Hodgson.

Certainly, that marked a downturn in our form and Broughton has come out now to try and explain just what things were like at the club during this time.

As quoted by The Liverpool Echo, he revealed that he was not part of the Spaniard leaving:

“The one thing I did not want to do was to sack Rafa. And the reason for that was nothing to do with my relationship with Rafa. The reason was that I felt the right people to decide who the new manager should be, or that it should be Rafa, were the new owners.”
