According to TMW, Liverpool are monitoring Felipe Monteiro of FC Porto but face a battle from a whole host of top sides if they want to bring him in.

A centre-half, Monteiro has been in good form in Portugal this season and at the age of 27-years-old he is right in his prime so would be suitable to come straight in to the side.

Indeed, we do need extra options in central defence with Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren both suffering injury lay-offs this year and the future of Mamadou Sakho still up in the air.

Monteiro, then, might be an option to explore further but it’s alleged the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Manchester City are all also involved.

It’s thought he’ll cost €50m (£42m,) though, and so we’d have some serious reservations about spending that kind of money on any defender – let alone one that’s not been at the Premier League’s level.
