As quoted by FourFourTwo, world-class defender Dani Alves has revealed that Liverpool had an agreement in place to sign him from Sevilla in 2006, only to then pull out of the deal.

We’ve seen plenty of stories like this over the years where it has become apparent we’ve got in for stars that have turned out to be world class but at the last moment we decided to get them.

Indeed, it creates a feeling of what might have been but you never can tell if things would have worked out even so.

Alves, though, would have joined for £9 million with the idea that he’d be a right midfielder instead of a right back but instead we went with Jermaine Pennant.

Telling the magazine, Alves said:

“I pretty much had an agreement with Liverpool. But for whatever reason it didn’t happen at the last moment and I really don’t know why, as I wasn’t the one conducting the negotiations. I had other people representing me back then.”

Clearly, then, we’ll never know what might have happened with Alves in the side but surely he would have bolstered us.
