Liverpool are seeking midfield additions this summer, as they prepare for the imminent loss of Emre Can at the end of his contract, but the Reds could be benefit from a similar scenario on the continent.

Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has confirmed that Germany ace Max Meyer will leave on a free transfer at the end of his contract this summer, revealing that the Bundesliga club failed to agreed fresh terms with the 22-year-old.

Quoted by Schalke’s official Twitter account, Heidel said:

“Max Meyer will definitely leave Schalke this summer. We’re dealing with the situation very professionally. It’s all been very amicable.”

Meyer, linked with both Liverpool and Arsenal this summer, is valued at £18m by TransferMarkt and a deal for the youngster would present a bargain in the current transfer market and would ease the pressure on the Reds after Can’s departure.

However, Arsenal are said to have sent head of recruitment Sven Mislintat to watch Meyer in action recently during the derby clash with Borussia Dortmund.
