Liverpool are following Napoli central midfielder Amadou Diawara “closely” according to ESPN UK reporter Michael Yokhin.

Up until now Tottenham have been the club most closely associated with a move for 20 year old, but it looks as though the Reds will give the London club some competition.

Diawara is a compatriot of Naby Keita and the Guinean has been widely heralded as one of the most promising young talents in Italy.

Napoli shelled out €14.5million on the holding midfield player when he signed from Bologna in 2016. He has however struggled to establish himself as a regular first team starter under manager Maurizio Sarri.

Last season, he managed 18 starts and 28 appearances in all competitions, but this campaign he has been restricted to just 11 starts and 15 appearances off the bench.

ESPN speculate that Diawara may consider leaving the San Paolo in order to get more first team football, and that he may be attracted to the idea of partnering Keita in Liverpool’s midfield. Whether that is being considered by the Reds, we’ll have to wait and see.
