Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has claimed that the club must spend £200million on four quality players this summer.

The Reds head into the final two games of the season with several injury problems, and Jurgen Klopp’s men need to beat Brighton on Sunday to guarantee Champions League football next season.

Aldridge has now identified a lack of depth as the Reds’ main problem this season, and called on the club to splash out £200million with four players arriving this summer.

In a column for the Liverpool Echo, he said: “I’d expect Jurgen Klopp to go strong on Sunday, primarily because he hasn’t really got any other choice. We don’t have a backup plan, we don’t have enough players, particularly in midfield. Ben Woodburn could do a job, but not at this stage of the season.

“What it shows is that we need to do some good business once again in the transfer window this summer. There cannot be any messing about. We need four quality players, players worth £50million each. That’s £200m on new talent. We need the best we can get.”

OPINION

It is clear that the difference between Liverpool and Manchester City this season has been down to the depth of their respective squads. Pep Guardiola has a seemingly endless pool of brilliant players to call upon when injuries strike, whereas Klopp is clutching at straws when Liverpool are affected by the same issues. While it would seem unlikely that Liverpool would splash out £50million on four separate players, a Champions League final win against Real Madrid would give them a huge injection of cash and make them a massively attractive prospect for most players. They already have Naby Keita arriving to strengthen the midfield, and if they manage to lure a decent back-up striker to Anfield along with a new centre-back, the Reds will be a serious prospect next season. They are the team that are looking most likely to challenge City’s dominance in the league next season, but they will need a perfect summer to do so.
