James Milner has posted a heartfelt message on Twitter to Liverpool teammate Joe Gomez after the first-team defender was ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury.

The Reds confirmed on their official website that the 20-year-old has undergone an operation for his ankle injury.

The England international will now miss Liverpool’s final Premier League game and the Champions League final, while he has also been ruled out of the summer’s World Cup.

Gomez is expected to be back in training for pre-season with the Merseyside club and his injury could not come at a worse timing.

Milner sent a message on social media to Gomez and gave him immense credit for his role in the side this season.

“Massively disappointed for you Joey G. Been a big part of our season, always pushing and putting the team first. Get fit soon mate,” Milner wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Gomez has definitely been an important player in Jurgen Klopp’s squad this season and made 31 senior appearances in all competitions. He has mainly been competing alongside fellow youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back position, while he also has the versatility to play at centre-back. Gomez has already proven in the past that he has the strength to come back from injuries and there should be plenty more opportunities to represent England in the future. It is likely he would have been on the bench for the Champions League final with Real Madrid, but it’s a shame he can’t be involved in some format. The future is definitely bright for Gomez at Anfield though and he has turned out to be a brilliant purchase since his arrival from Charlton. Liverpool’s main problem area is in defence and that needs addressing going into next season, but there are some talented options in the squad in the shape of Gomez, Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk. They perhaps need a real leader to galvanise the backline and Klopp needs to fix that problem moving forward.
