Jamie Carragher told the Daily Telegraph he is convinced Liverpool will completely overhaul their central midfield this summer.

The Anfield legend is “sure” the Merseyside giants will bring in at least two new players in that position in addition to Naby Keita, who has already agreed to join from RB Leipzig.

Carragher believes Liverpool were found wanting in central midfield in Saturday’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid despite the sterling efforts of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Giorginio Wijnaldum.

He added: “Going forward I certainly think the midfield needs looking at. That will change, with Keita coming in and talk of Lyon’s captain also coming in who plays that No 10 role.

“I think we lacked something in midfield I’d say. We got to the Champions League final with that midfield three of Wijnaldum, Milner, Henderson, they’ve been absolutely superb – but they’re workaholics.

“The class of Real Madrid in the centre of midfield with Kroos and Modric told really.

“We didn’t have a player who could match them on the ball. I think it’s important that we bring in a couple of bodies in that position.

“I’m sure that’s what the manager will look to do.”

OPINION

Carragher knows his onions, especially where his former club is concerned. The Liverpool icon is convinced the team are on the verge of something special, but will need new additions to take the step or two needed to make a permanent mark in the club’s illustrious history. The events of Saturday night showed what has been apparent all season, and ever since Steven Gerrard was past his prime. Liverpool don’t have a world class performer in central midfield, or anyone close to that level. Emre Can had hinted he had it in him, but the German’s peak years will now be spent at Juventus, while Henderson, Milner and Wijnaldum are all 7/10 players rather than the crackerjack or two needed. Keita is joining at the start of July to provide midfield driving force, but quality is needed behind him to set the tempo, move the ball around and screen the defence. Just like how Toni Kroos and Luka Modric did so expertly for Real in the final.
