Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is on the verge of earning a fresh deal at Anfield that will see him earn £50,000-a-week, according to The Sun

The newspaper report that the club are keen to reward the 21-year-old star for a brilliant season with a contract that will cement his status as a first-team star.

The Sun claim that manager Jurgen Klopp wants to make Gomez a firm part of his plans in 2018/19, with his new deal set to see him earn five times his current salary of £10,000-a-week [Daily Star].

The England international was on course for a World Cup place but rushed his recovery from an ankle injury and has undergone surgery which ruled him out.

OPINION

Despite the fact that Gomes only signed a new deal at Anfield 18 months ago, few would begrudge him this new contract. The young defender has been in brilliant form for the club since then, and looks to be a real star in the making. Gomez could well go on to be a fixture in the Liverpool defence for years and years to come, and Klopp has obviously recognised that. Aside from his obvious footballing talents, Gomez has also shown his commitment to the club this season with his willingness to play through injury. The 21-year-old sacrificed the possibility of a World Cup place to play for the Reds when they needed him in the back end of the Premier League season, and he ended up paying a massive price. While you could criticise Klopp for allowing him to do so, there can be no questioning Gomez’s determination, and that will put him in good stead in his future career at the club.
