Leeds United fans have urged James Milner to make a sensational return after he professed his devotion to the club in a Times interview.
The Liverpool midfielder is on the verge of the biggest match of his career as he prepares for a starting role in Liverpool’s Champions League final showdown against Real Madrid on Saturday night.
But Milner told the Times that he remains fiercely devoted to Leeds despite leaving his boyhood club aged 18 and spending most of his career at other leading clubs in England.
“Growing up a Leeds fan, I was never allowed to wear a red T-shirt, my old man never allowed it. Seriously. ‘We can’t wear red. We’re Leeds,’ Milner recalled.
“It was strange when I signed for Liverpool, actually wearing red. My dad made a joke about it, saying, ‘That’s the first time I’ve seen you in red.’ I still follow Leeds and want them to do well and still have that same feeling towards Manchester United.”
United fans have interpreted Milner’s comments as a major hint that he is keen to return to Elland Road later in his career.
Supporters of the Yorkshire giants took to social media en masse to share the 32-year-old’s quotes about the club and to predict that he will eventually head back to where his career began.
