Liverpool fans on social media fumed over a report that claimed that Philippe Coutinho was set to receive a Champions League winners medal if the Reds won on Saturday.

The Liverpool Echo reported that the Reds had decided to awarded the Brazilian playmaker a medal for his contribution during the group stages of the tournament, even though he left Anfield to join Barcelona for £142million in January.

The local newspaper revealed that UEFA regulations dictate that 40 goal medals are given out to the winning team, 30 silver medals to the runners-up, and that it’s up to the club to decide how to distribute them.

Coutinho featured five times for the Reds in this season’s Champions League, scoring five goals and registering two assists.

The midfielder is one of 25 players to have pulled on the famous jersey for the Merseyside giants in the prestigious European tournament this season.

However despite featuring heavily in the contest when he was at the club, a large majority of fans were not happy to hear he would get medal on Saturday.

One tweeted that he hoped Jurgen Klopp personally delivered the medal to the Brazilian before smiling and laughing as he walked away, while others simply took to calling the midfielder a rat.

While some tried to argue that he was entitled to one, they were outnumbered on social media by those fuming at the decision.
