Emre Can will pocket a staggering £14million signing-on fee after completing his free transfer from Liverpool to Juventus, it was confirmed today.

The Serie A giants announced on their official website that the Germany international, 24, has signed a four-year deal after passing a medical in Turin.

Can rejected Liverpool’s offer of a new deal in favour of making the move to Italy.

“Emre Can has signed with the Bianconeri to officially join the club on July 1 2018 on a four-year deal,” the statement read.

“As a result of the signature of the agreement, Juventus will incur additional costs of 16 million euros (£14million) to be paid over the next two financial years.”

OPINION

For those who wondered quite why Can was swapping one of Europe’s most exciting teams where he was a regular starter for a move to a less competitive league – albeit at a prestigious club – this Juventus announcement explains a lot. Can is not just getting a lucrative contract, as he would have if he had stayed at Anfield, but he will take home a stunning signing-on fee spread out over two years and working out at £7million-a-year. Nice work if you can get it. Can will naturally claim it is not about the money, and it is all about the sporting challenge. Certainly, his passing game and style of play is ideally suited to Serie A, where he will have more time on the ball and will not be hurried to the same extent, an issue that stopped him from joining the top bracket of Premier League midfielder. But Juventus have a vice-like grip on Serie A and winning the league there would not be anywhere near as much of an achievement as doing the same at Anfield.
