Liverpool assistant manager Zeljko Buvac has agreed personal terms to become the new manager of Fenerbahce, according to a Bosnian TV reporter.

Reliable broadcast journalist Haris Mrkonja reported on his personal Twitter account on Thursday morning that Jurgen Klopp’s long-standing number two is in advanced talks to join the Turkish club.

But Mrkonja explained that colleagues at Turkish news outlet Sporx have told him that Buvac is not the number one target for Fenerbahce and there is no guarantee he will land the job.

OPINION

The deal is not done yet for Buvac to join Fenerbahce, but what is seemingly certain is that his permanent exit from Liverpool will soon be confirmed, irrespective of whether he pitches up in Turkey. Buvac stepped down from his role as number two to Klopp on the eve of the club’s momentous Champions League semi-final clash with Roma and “personal reasons” was cited as the excuse for his absence from the final matches of the campaign, including the club’s biggest match in a decade. There is surely no way back for Buvac at Anfield, with Pep Ljinders already back on board after being granted a senior coaching role at the club following his return. It remains a mystery why the Bosnian left Liverpool at such a critical juncture, but his working relationship with Klopp appears to have broken down after 17 years together, at Mainz, Dortmund and the Merseyside giants. With another ex-Liverpool man Damien Comolli in charge of recruitment at Fenerbahce, Buvac’s CV and methods will surely be known inside out by the Turks.
