Mario Gotze was one of the main men during Jurgen Klopp’s successful time at Borussia Dortmund, and the Germany international has now opened the door to a potential reunion at Liverpool.

Speaking in the documentary ‘Being Mario Gotze’, created by DAZN, Gotze said, as quoted by the Independent: “I decided to leave Bayern and Jurgen Klopp was interested in getting me to Liverpool. And I was also interested in working with him again.

“It’s still existing. He is a world-class coach and that’s why it’s always an option. I decided to join Borussia Dortmund, but it was not a decision against Liverpool or Jurgen Klopp. But on the contrary.”

While this could merely be seen as a player extolling the virtues of a former coach, it is quite clear that Gotze is eyeing up a reunion with Klopp at Liverpool with this huge admission.

And, due to their highly fruitful past relationship, Klopp may indeed be considering taking him up on his claims this summer.

However, he must resist any thoughts of that happening, with Gotze to add little to this Liverpool squad.

The 26-year-old has struggled to get going upon his return to Dortmund following a spell at Bayern Munich, having scored just twice and provided seven assists in 32 games in 2017/18.

Gotze would have little chance of making that many appearances at Liverpool, with Klopp’s preferred front three backed up by a wealth of options which is growing in the transfer market as we speak.

The Germany international would not likely come cheap either, with Gotze having cost Dortmund £20million on his return with the ace still having two years left on his deal.

All in all it is a swoop which makes little sense for anyone involved, and Klopp must resist any temptation to make a move for the World Cup winner following this come-and-get-me plea.
