Liverpool must slash Sturridge price

OPINION

Liverpool need to lower their price for attacker Daniel Sturridge or they will be stuck paying his lucrative wages until next summer.

It is believed that the Reds will demand £15million for the 28-year-old attacker, as reported by the Telegraph, as they’re determined not to let him go cheaply.

As the newspaper points out Sturridge’s contract is set to expire in 2019 and he knows that he could simply bide his time before exiting the club on a free transfer next summer.

The 28-year-old could be tempted to do that as given the fact he is on £120,000-a-week, as stated by The Times, he might choose to pick up his bumper pay packet instead of moving to get regular football.

While the Telegraph’s original report states that there are several European teams interested in the forward, Sevilla and Fenerbahce are named, given his terrible injury record no one will pay his wage.

There’s also the fact that Sturridge was set to stay in order to fight for his Anfield future, as previously reported by The Sun, as he knew his massive wage limited his options when it came to finding a new club.

This implied that he was unlikely to lower his demands and given that he has always appeared confident in his ability, which is natural, he may feel he can force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans one way or another.

The Reds could also find themselves stuck with him if he is set to be as fussy about his next club as a report by the Times suggested, because they claimed that he might not see playing in Turkey at Fenerbahce as the right platform for the next stage of his career.

While it’s admirable the Reds are trying to get the most money out of Sturridge’s sale they’re better off taking a hit on his transfer fee rather than pointlessly paying his wages throughout the 2018/19 season.

As that would be costly given how much they are, how likely he is to feature and the fact that he could just walk away for free when the campaign ends.

Therefore the Reds must dramatically slash Sturridge’s asking price in order to attract more teams perhaps one who will stump up a wage he’ll accept if the initial transfer fee is lower in order to get him off their books.

If they don’t Jurgen Klopp’s side could end up picking his costly weekly bill until he abandons them for no fee at all.
