Robbie Fowler insisted that while Liverpool have made some exciting signings this summer the club are still trying to catch up with Manchester City.

The Red legend effectively assessed his former side’s Premier League title chances for the upcoming season and shared that given how Man City stormed the league last season then they were still the favourites.

However Fowler did speak positively on the signings that Jurgen Klopp had made so far this summer and stated that he believes at the very least the Reds will put more pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

“Like everyone at Liverpool, I’m excited at the club paying out a world-record fee for a goalkeeper – but let’s not get carried away believing the long wait to win the title is over,” said the retired forward in his column for the Daily Mirror.

“Yes, Alisson is world class. It’s a strong statement of intent and Reds fans are buzzing, but Manchester City are still the team to catch.

“I’m thrilled at Liverpool’s spending during the summer, bringing in Alisson, Fabinho, and Naby Keita, but City finished 25 points clear of Liverpool when they won the Premier League title in May, it would take a huge swing to turn that round.

“So I don’t think anyone associated with Liverpool can come out and say: ‘Yes, we’re going to win the Premier League’ with any great confidence.

“I believe they will put more pressure on City, but Liverpool are still playing catch-up. It’s the same for every other team in the Premier League.

“It’s still brilliant, signing all these players, especially with £75m defender Virgil van Dijk starting the season in the same defence as Alisson.

“There’s also Fabinho and Keita, they are all brilliant, on paper – though Jurgen Klopp has to make sure they all gel, he will be looking to get them working well as a unit from the off.”

“But look at Manchester City again – they have brought in Riyad Mahrez from Leicester for £60m, they’re not standing still.”

OPINION

Fowler may insist that the Reds supporters don’t get carried away after watching the club conduct some excellent transfer business in this window so far, but it’s hard not to. Everything the Reds legend says makes sense as Man City have gotten stronger over the summer and were relatively comfortable when it came to winning the Premier League last season. However if a fan can’t believe that the club can lift the league title after a window like the Reds have had so far, when can they. While it’s true that the Reds did finish drastically behind Man City in the race for the title, the club have clearly addressed the key areas of the team that were letting them down. If every one of Klopp’s signing are able to deliver what they look capable of based on past performances, then perhaps Man City should be starting to sweat over their ability to hold on to their crown. The Reds impressed everyone by reaching the Champions League final last season and if anything, it has made them more determined to lift trophies in the very near future.
